At Energy Store, we’re proud to work as a trusted partner of Octopus Energy and support innovative solutions that help make clean energy more accessible and affordable. One of the most exciting recent developments is their new tariff, Tenant Power, designed specifically for social housing homes equipped with renewable technology.

What is Tenant Power?

Tenant Power is a tariff created for social housing tenants living in homes with solar panels and battery storage. It is designed to solve a long-standing challenge in the sector: ensuring that both tenants and landlords benefit fairly from renewable energy installations.

Traditionally, the benefits of solar energy haven’t always been shared effectively between the parties investing in it and those living in the homes. Tenant Power changes that balance.

How does it work?

Homes equipped with solar and battery systems can generate and store their own clean electricity.

With Tenant Power:

  • Solar energy powers the home first

  • Excess energy is stored or exported

  • Tenants use a tariff designed specifically for these setups

  • Landlords also benefit from exported energy value

It creates a simple shared system where renewable energy works better for everyone involved.

Benefits for tenants and landlords

Tenant Power is designed as a shared value model:

  • Tenants benefit from lower electricity costs

  • Landlords receive value from exported energy generation

This helps make renewable energy investment more financially viable for social housing providers while ensuring residents directly benefit from the clean energy their homes produce.

Savings for tenants

According to Octopus Energy, tenants can typically save around £200 per year on electricity bills.

In homes with additional low-carbon technology, such as heat pumps, savings can be even higher, reaching up to around £432 per year in total energy savings scenarios highlighted by Octopus.

Why this matters

Tenant Power is designed to accelerate the rollout of renewable technology across social housing by removing financial barriers for landlords while ensuring tenants also benefit.

It supports wider adoption of:

  • Solar PV systems

  • Battery storage

  • Low-carbon heating technologies

Ultimately, it helps make clean energy more accessible at scale.
